What are laser levels?

Laser levels are a popular tool used in construction and surveying, and are commonly used for levelling and aligning. The laser projects a red or green line onto a surface (vertical or horizontal) and can be used in a range of applications from domestic jobs such as frame hanging to checking the alignment of interior walls in professional building work.

Why laser levels?

A laser levels laser allows for accurate alignment of work when needed. They can project one or more fixed lines along a vertical or horizontal axis to allow you to accurately make adjustments to ensure the work is level.

What is a laser level used for?

Laser levels can be used in a range of applications, where accuracy curtailing to straightness and levelness are important. Domestic chores like putting up shelving and rails can benefit from the use of a laser level.
They can be used in both indoor and outdoor environments and most can be mounted on a tripod for greater stability, so you can be assured of the best possible accuracy in your work.

Types of laser levels

Laser levels come in a variety of types, each with their own unique features and benefits. Some laser levels come with green lasers whilst others emit a red laser line. There individual benefits and uses are outline below.

• Line laser levels/laser line generators These types of laser levels emit a level line on the wall in a single line or a cross-hair. Most levels of this type emit in one direction and are mostly used in indoor applications. Whilst they are typically handheld, they can be mounted or rested on structure like ladders or tables.

• Rotary laser levels These types of levels emit a level line in a rotary fashion, hence their moniker. They can create a level line around 360 degrees horizontally and some can be placed over on their side to emit vertically. They are mostly used indoors but can be used in outdoor environments when paired with a laser receiver, this is because the human eye will not be able to detect the line in daylight for more than several feet.

• Self-levelling lasers These tyles of laser levels automatically find and maintain levels within a determined range.

• Manual leveling lasers These laser levels are manually levelled by adjusting the unit until the vial bubbles are level.

Considerations when choosing a laser level

There are a few factors to take into account when choosing a laser level that's suited to your requirements.

• Red lasers or green lasers? - red and green lasers have different benefits, they both offer high accuracy but depending on factors like budget or environment, they can be more or less suitable.

Red lasers tend to have a longer battery life and tend not to be as heavy on power requirements as green lasers are. They are also cheaper in most cases so are a good choice if you're on a budget. They have less of a range then green lasers but this can be aided by the use of a laser receiver.

Green lasers are a lot more visible to the human eye than red, and as such are better for working in environments like outdoors where daylight would make red light less visible. Their range is also a lot better making them a more efficient choice in wider spaces, without the need for a laser receiver. They do however tend to be more expensive so this needs to be taken into consideration.

FAQ

Why are green laser levels more expensive?

Whilst all laser levels offer the same level of accuracy, green laser levels are pricier because they have more components. Green laser diodes are better than red, resulting in greater visibility and range. The combination of better optics and more tech means their cost is pricier than their red lasered counterparts.

Are laser levels worth the investment?

Laser levels are highly accurate and are used in a range of applications, so this is definitely something in the plus column to consider. However, in some cases such as regular domestic DIY home jobs, they may be a little too accurate, in instances where a standard spirit level may suffice.
